WOMEN & GIRLS CRICKET

A little history on how our Women’s & Girls team started…
The women’s softball team at SCCC began in the summer of 2018, when a group of women and girls with connections to the club, took part in a softball cricket festival. After getting a taste for softball cricket, ‘The Rootettes’ were born. The team entered the indoor softball league in 2018-19 and the Women and Girls Section at SCCC was formally launched in April 2019 attracting much media attention. In August 2019, SCCC hosted the first ever Women and Girls ‘Super Over Festival’ at Abbeydale Sports Club.

Where our Women & Girls Cricket Team are now…
Our team is a nice mix of girls who have come through the Collegiate’s junior system and adults with a range of backgrounds and experiences. We are always looking for new players and welcome any experience levels.

We offer regular weekly coaching, a welcoming environment, and opportunities to play in Hardball and Softball matches. Whatever your level of skill and experience, we have something for you. Some of our women are complete beginners looking for fun, exercise and a way of meeting new people. Others are experienced and skilled players wanting to compete at a higher level.

We train during the summer at Abbeydale Sports club in the nets on Wednesday evening with our coach Millie, and our games will generally be played on Sundays.

If you’ve played cricket all your life, or are looking to take up a new sport, then please do get in touch, we’d love to have you!

Hardball Cricket 2023 Season
Emily Fothergill has been our W&G Hardball Captain this year and has done an excellent job in organising all our fixtures this summer.

This year we have played in Division 1 which we won the league and are off to the Premier League for the 2024 season.

We have also played in the Hardball Super 8’s this summer and came 6th in the league, this has been great game play for our players who are new to cricket or have decided to take the leap from Softball to Hardball cricket.

We have also played some friendly Hardball matches against Menston CC, Norton Oakes Acorns and Wickersley Vixens. We also had the great pleasure of hosting Nantes ‘The French Touring Cricket Team’ this summer, which was great fun watching them swap their green berets for the Pink beret if they dropped a catch!

Hardball Cricket 2024
The Premier League is an exciting new chapter as they are going through big changes and have recently created a whole new Premier League, which is made up of committee members from all 7 clubs playing within the league, YCB members as well as independent committee members, who are all invested in the Women’s Game.

The first half of the season sees up playing in The Hundred Cricket Festivals, followed the second half of the season playing in 40 over matches.

Our Captain for the 2024 season is Grace Hirst and Vice Captain is Emily Day.

Softball Cricket 2023/24 Season
Bev Woodcock has been our W&G Softball Captain this season and has done an excellent job at getting a team together for 10 out of the 16 matches we have played. It’s not been an easy task and has felt like a very long softball season this year, with the jump in fixture to 16 matches in 2023 as opposed to 8 in 2022 and all the rain we have had, cancelling matches at last minute.

Our Women’s softball team took a heavy defeat this year and we have now been relegated to Division 2, which we feel will be a better fit for our softball team. We are currently going through a transition phase and are looking to build a new team for the 2024 season, if you’d like to start playing softball cricket, we’d loved to welcome you to the team, we train at our home ground Abbeydale Sports Club on Wednesday evenings 6-7.30pm and offer a free trial for your first session.

Girls Only Junior Cricket
We have played in the girls’ softball festivals for the last few years and this year the Ben Jessops Junior league have launched a Girls Only U13’s Hardball pairs league, which we entered a team, our team was made up of junior girls from Sheffield Collegiate, Norton Oakes, Sheffield Super Kings and Sheffield United. We played against Hallam & Allama Iqbal, Bradfield and friends as well as Millhouses who already have a full team of girls and play in the mixed junior league.

We played in the first girls indoor league for Girls this winter with a U14 girls Hardball team and a girls U12 Softball team.
This summer we will have an U10 & U12 Girls Softball team as well as our Girls U14 Hardball Team. The U10 & U12 Girls train on a Friday night as part of our Junior Root academy and offer girls only training session or the girls are welcome to train with the mixed U9’s session. Training is 6-7.30pm every Friday, so do pop down if your daughter would like to give cricket a go,

Any enquiries about W&G cricket please contact us at sheffccc.women@gmail.com or Phone Andrea White on 07921 826629.

We are always looking for scorers and umpires at our matches, so if you are ever available and fancy giving it a go it would be greatly appreciated!

Finally, if you know of anyone who might like to sponsor W&G at Collegiate, please do get in touch.
