Sheffield Collegiate CC - 5th XI vs Stocksbridge CC, Yorks - 3rd XI

As nobody from the 5ths has posted a report thought I would have a go. For probably the first time this season Ben won the toss. Having decided to bowl both Josh Varley and Laurie Brennan had to cope with difficult conditions. It was Josh who got the first wicket getting the opener going back to one LBW for 9.

With Stocksbridge only bringing 9 (other 2 probably thought no play to day) in effect that was 3 down. Lacey senior next to join the party taking a catch in the covers getting Laurie his wicket.

Much Needed Win at Stocksbridge

Three wins out of four fixtures looks like the minimum needed to avoid relegation so this win at Stocksbridge was more than welcome.

After a long and reasoned debate we agreed to start at 3 playing 31 overs and by then the pitch was just about fit. We were put in and the 2 Bens, Rooke and Fielding, got us off to a wonderful start. Soon ticking over at fives they put the over confident opposition on the back foot. They reached the mid 70s before better bowling pegged them back a little and the rate dropped. Ben F completed his 50 before Rooke holed out for a well constructed 30. Attempting to up the rate Webbo, Dad and Lad Varley and Ben F all departed quickly. Only Angry managed to reach 20 well supported for a while by Connor Shelley. We finished on 132 for 8, well pleased.

2nds march on

I’m afraid with no Bully this week, the report is down to me and a lot less entertaining than his.

Anyway we won the toss and chose to field against an odd looking and hardly recognisable Doncaster team. This proved to be the case as Kaiser and Rob Shaw bowled tight and effectively with Kaiser picking up 1 wicket in his 7 overs and Rob Shaw varying his bowling and picking up 3. Off to a good start in a must win game against relegation candidates.

With the introduction of Matt ‘quick over’ Root from one end and Chris Pickford the other we were getting thru the overs quickly without many runs but no wickets. That all changed when posh boy came on to bowl and took a lovely 3 fer and was supported by Fiddles at the other end snaffling 1 wicket.

Against All Odds………….

The stiffs travelled to 2nd place Darfield on Saturday with a very inexperienced side, with only Rooty above the age of 29! Surely defeat was inevitable. But as Steve Brookstein famously sung, against all odds, we returned back to our upper class suburbs with 7 points.

In came Bishop, Kaizer, Moroney, Stefan for Stewie, Newman, Street and Shaw – the last 2 on 3rd team duty as they “had” to win. Presumably our game was not a “must win” one then? Whilst I don’t want to take the shine off a fantastic victory (for both 2nds & 3rds) – hope this does not become a regular occurrence, bearing in mind that we are far from safe in the league.

2nds v Rotherham, Sat 24th July

After a 2 year absence of doing match reports, I am back by popular demand. Sorry Seals. What a season we have had so far, so many ups and downs. Thing is, nobody said it was easy, there again, no one ever said it would be this hard. Oh well, let me take you back to the start…

U 17's A season of what might have been, but might have a successful ending.

U17’s 2010 Season.

What can only be described as an up and down season in the league has been completely changed around with regards to the Paramore Cup.

But alas back to the league, typically the last game of the season it ends with a wash out, hopefully to be arranged next week. Two wins for the season and games lost that should never have been, but will not go there as I have already kicked the hairdryer in the changing room after the last league game.

That out of the way on to the cup run, which was a surprise as my cup runs over - the last few seasons have been a run of one. This season we have beaten the top teams in the league with near enough the same side that was beaten the match before in the league.

Carlsberg don't do Cricket Matches..........

Saturday saw the mighty fives travel to Ridgeway, 5th place vs. 4th place with the top 3 going up this year a proper promotion battle.

Quality pork pie courtesy of Garse enjoyed in a very cosy changing room!

We lost the toss again and were inserted but would have batted first anyway!

Our innings contained some fantastic individual efforts including a delightful and well deserved 59 for Andy Udall, real proof that practice over the winter pays off, another well built and very mature innings from Alex Varley sharing in a 54 run partnership for the 2nd wicket, and a swift 37 from me including 2 very satisfying straight sixes. We finished with 173 all out in the 46th over which we thought was enough with the bowling attack we had available.

U11 Blues win with second hatrick hero of the season!!

The U11 blue squad won their merit fixture last night against Norton Oakes with a good all round team performance, however for the second time this season there was a performance we felt deserved a mention on our website!

After James Hall's hatrick only a few games ago Farrakh Khan repeated the feat with sensational figures of 2 overs 1 maiden 4 wickets 2 runs including his hatrick. his two overs went;

. . . . w w
W . x W . .

The only runs off his bowling was a wide!!

A fantastic achievement and a great spell to watch, well done Farrakh!

Father & Son day at HSBC. Or should that be 'Thank you Doctor'

Off the back of 4 straight wins, the revitalised 5XI return to their spiritual home of HSBC for the first time this season.

Superb Stewart as seconds win at Shiregreen

The seconds set off to Shiregreen on a nice day after a text from Bartles saying he might be late as he had to look after a dishwasher! After his babysitting duties were done he arrived at Shiregreen and we had a good warm up taken by Tom Lister. New captain for the day Ben Fielding won the toss and decided to bat on a decent looking track.

Tommo Ton and Two For as Town downed by Stiffs

Two weeks on from Ice Station Rotherham and the Stiffs travelled with a much changed team to complete their away quota in the mini Yorkshire League tri challenge at Doncaster.

The temperature baking. Youthful side with Bully, Stewie, Benjy and Rooty replaced by Shawsy,Minnie, Rooke Senior and Mikey fresh from Astroturf rugby in Lanzarote. Don't ask.

Warm up not really required. Toss actually mattered and was duly won.

With two of our senior players back in the shed for 10 things didn't look good. Priesters struggling on with foot/ankle injury bowled for 0 and Tom out for 10 off just 7 balls.

Barts and Tommo then added yet another century stand for the team before Barts perished for a classy 50. AJ batted with his usual common sense and a further 50 was added.

3 on the bounce for the 5ths

3 on the bounce for the 5ths

Following the hard work in the nets this winter hopes were high that this season would see a change in fortunes! With losses to Totley and Stocksbridge no change of fortune:

Hallam at the Gobi (8thMay). The only consistent factor was Ben losing the toss, but this time we were asked to bat first which is what we would have decided to do and the luck had changed, 220 in the 46 overs, runs of note to Pearson 30, Ben 44 (don’t mention the bat) and an amazing knock by Moroney 47 with 6 fours and 2 sixes one going for a dropped goal over the rugby post I kid you not.
