3rd’s promoted as champions after Straws shows his class

The 3rds went off to play the last game of the season at ‘home’ in Graves Park needing 7 points to secure the title. We firstly have to thank Norton Woodseats for letting us use the ground and for having 3 people there to help us get everything set up before the start.

Simmo made it in time to toss with the game being closer to work than Rossington the previous week. He duly lost the toss and we were inserted to bat on a deck which didn’t look fantastic. However any misgivings about the deck were soon put to rest as Straws and Alex Varley opened up and looked in no trouble at all.

Straws went off like a train hitting a flurry at boundaries including everyone’s favourite shot of the day a glorious on-drive off the opening bowler.

Under 11s Red Army secure the Chris Drury Title

I am delighted to report that exceeding all expectations under the excellent management of Roger Justin the Under 11s Reds secured the league title losing just one game on the way.

More importantly every member of the squad improved immeasurably during the season, which is testimony to their hard work and willingness to listen to the coaching received. Well done Boys.

Under 9s Blue Finals Day

I am pleased to report that having won 14 out of 15 regular season games the Under 9s Blue won 2 out of 3 games at Finals Day losing by single figures to Doncaster.

This for some of the players has been the culmination of 3 seasons hard work during which every one of them has improved beyond recognition. The results have inevitably also improved but that is irrelevant at this level. Indeed that is the ethos of almost every club we have shared the enjoyment with over the last 3 seasons.

The SQUAD (note not just 8 players) managed by Richard Thomas and coached by Chris Ash have been a credit to the club. The emphasis has been on enjoyment and improvement but the team themselves have demonstrated a competitive edge whilst playing the game the Collegiate way.

sheffield collegiate vs hull 30/7/11

After last weeks dramatic defeat to barnsley our next challenge was that of 3rd bottom side Hull. We again won the toss and decided again to bat with Callis an Albert again opening up our innings. After Callis snicked off 4th ball but didnt walk we hoped from there he would kick on and score some runs but again it wasnt his day as he had a ball that popped up and he could only guide the ball down midwicket's throat. With the score at 23 for 1 Billy and Albert seized control of the game playing some delightful strokes and they had a race to 50 which Patmore just won closely followed by Billy who continued his form from the previous week where he scored a ton for Worcestershire. They continued to dominate the lacklustre Hull attack who didnt look like taking a wicket all day.

sheffield collegiate vs barnsley 24/07/11

After yesterdays charismatic performance at Cleethorpes we had high hopes of th day ahead. Albert again won the toss and chose to bat. We had a terrible start to the innings as Callis went for a duck edging to first slip off the bowling of Wilkinson. Billy came in at 3 and looked good playing some majestic shots and looking like he had discovered some real form, but he skied one to mid off and after a cameo 23 he had to go 30 for 2. Wally in at 4 but his partnership with Albie didnt last long as Albie was superbly caught behind. Turbo needed to give us a similar contribution to Saturday and it looked like he would as he was playing with the swagger and confidence that you would expect from him but Wally was not in the runs today and he was well caught at slip by Widdup.

Snoopy shows us how it’s done.

Snoopy shows us how it’s done.

A very quick run down of events, Pete Lister wins toss and elects to bat much to Ben’s disbelief. Not having the score book with me I am not sure of the totals apart from Snoops and Rob Priestley were together on 81 for 7.

By the time Snoops was out for an excellent 91 the they had put on 81 with the score on 162, with rob getting a nice 40ish. We finish on a respectable 184.

On to the fielding side of things, we looked at one stage to be heading for a “Langdale” moment with Prash taking the first 6 wickets but that was to be that with Ian Davey chipping in with a wicket taking middle stump (well he had to bowl them out as nobody had told him about our catching!!)

sheffield collegiate vs cleethorpes 23/07/11

Albert was handed the captaincy due to Dicko and Maccas' absence at a stag do in Dublin. He won the toss and decided to bat and he and Callis opened the batting and batted superbly to put on 71 before Albert was caught at slip for 48 much to his disbelief.Even though Callis looked comfortable he wasnt playing free strokes and would look to push on. In at 3 was Billy looking to rediscover some sort of form after a recent barren spell and sadly today was not his day after he was LBW for 0 leaving the score 80 for 2 with two quick wickets falling Wally was in looking to steady the ship but his and Callis' partnership didnt last long as Callis gave away his wicket looking to push on after a slow scoring afternoon for him.

sheffield collegiate vs rotherham town 16/07/11

After a unwelcome rain interuption of an hour and a half we finally got this mouthwatering contest underway with Rotherham winning the toss and having a bat. With the game reduced to 40 oversRudolph and Moorehouse opened the batting looking to score quickly and put on a formiddable target. While Jase and Turbo were our opening bowlers they both were bowling well in difficult conditions and reduced Rotherham to 30 for 0 inside 9 overs before the rain fell again and we had a prolonged spell of heavy rain which looked at first that it may end the game early. But after an early tea and a lot of patience the waterlogged wicket ends dried up and at 4 15 we were back underway with Rotherham still having to complete 40 overs.

Not just a bowler...

I thought I would get this on here asap before we start getting grief from anyone!

In a nutshell Langers again helped the fives to 25 valuable points, this time with the bat. On a very tricky pitch he managed a fantastic 100 not out off only 93 balls. He then took a quick 3 fer before he jets off to Portugal for the rest of the season to have a well earned rest!!!!!

sheffield collegiate vs sheffield united 09/07/11

We were lucky to have our full strength side out on saturday against a struggling United who were desperate need of a victory after another season of struggle for them.Dicko won the toss and decided to bat on a slow wicket but had potential to be a high scoring pitch.

Callis and Albert opened up and Callis set the tone for the rest of the innings with a crashing 4 throught the covers first ball of the match. Unfortunately Albert wasn't having the best of times and was out for 6 sadly unable to carry on his brilliant spell of form. In at number 3 was Joe and he and Callis were as cool as a cucumber in the middle looking in complete control. The scoring rate was consistently good at 4.5 to 5 an over that was the foundations to push on later in the innings.

Sheffield Collegiate vs Scarborough 02/07/11

We arrived at abbeydale with a fresh optimism after last weeks convincing 8 wicket win at Abbleby Frodingham we made 2 changes with Joe and Tank replacing Kieren and Mutters respectively. We lost the toss and we were inserted and we didnt make a good start to our innings losing blade for 0 as he skied a shot off his edge straight to mid off. In at 3 was Joe and he and Albert looked comfortable before Albert got a dubious decision against him as he 'edged behind'off the bowling of the other Lyth.

1st team trip to Sunny Scunny! by Alex "Bruce" Willis

We arrived at appleby frodingham with a mix of experience and inexperience ahead of a 5th vs 6th game in the Yorkshire league.

Dicko won the toss and inserted them in to bat and this proved an inspired decision as jase prized their number 2 batsmen into a huge swing and it flew off the edge of the bat staright to Albie.

Then frod had a frustrating partenership of 87 which took the wind out of our sails for a while we were not helping our cause with a few chances going down ,but finally we broke the partenership when jase again forced the number 3 to edge behind to the safe hands of Albert.

2nd Event of the Week

U17’s V Thorncliffe

Match reports have not been my specialty this season, if fact this is the first for the U17 team and we have now played 6 matches.

I will get the Parramore Cup out of the way first, a loss to Frechville at their ground. I could turn out the old artificial pitch nonsense and the very short boundary, but in summary they played better than we did end of story.

Sheffield Collegiate First XI vs Castleford First XI Yorkshire League Round 7

After an absence of a few matches I am back with the latest match report, Castleford. The others that I have missed out will now be forgotten (rest their souls) and I will start afresh. On a sunny Saturday the troops set of up to the town of Castleford and a ground with some monstrously big square boundaries. Spiritual leader Matthew Dixon won the toss and decided to have a Gary Pratt. Opening up was our esteemed matriarch Blade, and the Bow-Legged wonder Joseph Edward Root, Yorkshire CCC employee. Blade started off brightly and hit a nice boundary before he indulged in one of his favourite pastimes when not playing cricket. However, fishing in cricket is not a good idea and snicked off to one Jason Pitcher, who used to frequent the squares of Abbeydale.

Simmo’s side stay top after juniors take 5 points against Maltby

We arrived at Abbeydale an hour before the start of our game with a team consisting of one 20 year old, two 19 year olds and the rest all still being able to play junior cricket! This was mainly thanks to Captain Simmo deciding the cricket season is a great time to sun yourself by the pool in Turkey for a week, and Crofty.. being himself and ending up with only one elbow.
