Under 15s

Proud day for Sheffield

SCCC represented in the Lord’s Taverners Lord Cowdrey Cup 12th - 14th August 2008.

Two junior players Tom Hancock (skipper) and Jonny Udall (wkt keeper) were in the squad that nearly followed Sheffield’s example last year in winning the competition, this year they were beaten finalists. Sheffield who had won both games (Leeds and Bradford) to get into the final stages, then won all three of their play off group games but lost to London North in the 40 over final.  read more »

Club Family Day

The Club Family Day and Gordon Hall 6-a-side that was unfortunately cancelled last year due to rain is due to be held on Sunday, August 24.

With the current unavailibility of a significant number of players we are contemplating changes from the 6-a-side format to 20/20 and also possibly the date. We are looking at a junior and senior 20/20 match with players made up from U/13 to U/17 in the junior match and all teams in the seniors. The matches will be played in coloured clothing with a white ball and all the normal 20/20 rules.  read more »

U15' Reds have that away day.........at last

Following Tom Lister’s tactical master class of relieving Udall senior from his team manager duties the team was picked for the match against Frecheville. Tom did not have the problem of getting players to turn up…quite the opposite. On to the game, T Hancock and J Lister opened with Jonny at 3 (me thinks pressure was put on J Lister to open, no guesses as to who it was eh Jon) With the score on 12 the first wicket fell, this had jonny coming to the crease (having a point to prove to Udall senior, who had beat his score on Saturday …..Chin up son).
Both Tom and Jon played some nice shots around the ground both giving the opposition one chance to send them back. Tom retired on 51 and he says he cant bat!! Jonny followed later on 34. The final score being 119 for 3.  read more »

Mentone Grammar beat Academy XI

On a damp morning at Abbeydale the first ever SCCC Academy XI played Mentone Grammar School, a touring side from Melbourne, Australia.

We won the toss and put Mentone in to bat a decision quickly vindicated after the opening partnership of Chris Pickford and Rob Shaw reduced Mentone to 18 – 2, Rob picking up both of the wickets, the second of which a fantastic catch by Josh Jones at second slip.
Josh then came on to replace Chris and bowled two overs picking up a wicket with an absolute jaffa sending off pole flying. Then Josh who had come in to the game with a back niggle felt a twinge so was taken out of the attack and was replaced by Jack Lister.  read more »

Rotherham pheonix 55 all out[callis 4-11,ramzan 2-9,mines2-10)
Sheff Coll 56-2(lee 34*)

Having dissmissed Pheonix for 27 at Rotherham Collegiate were in confident mood for the return match at Abbeydale.
The Pheonix manager told me that they had a far stronger team out this time ; but they were soon in trouble when Danny Mines had the opener caught behind by chris Norris . Pheonix then took the score on to 28 before Danny clean bowled the no 3 . Chris Pickford bowled a very good spell without any luck, and when the opening bowlers had completed their overs pheonix were 28 for 2.  read more »

Massive U15's

Eckington 142 for 2 SCCC 98 ao.

Like our batting performance an all too brief match report!

Riaz looked round and let Simmo captain. Wyles opened with Davey. ID got a bit of tap despite bowling fairly well for an opening batsman but still got some tap. Replaced by Fielding who did similar but at a slightly more economical rate. Will Lacey bowled nicely but their openers put on 100 before their overseas (60) was LBW to a slower bal in Wylie's 2nd. No. 3 departed thanks to a superman runout from Wyles. Other opener batted through for 64. Prash bowled well at the death apart from a couple of wides. The fielding had been amusing in places and a couple of dropped catches coupled with some pretty good batting meant we had a big total to chase.  read more »

Junior Match Fees

Junior match fees will increase from the current £5 to £7.50 as of 1 June 2008. This increase is less than the £10 which was passed at the AGM and affects juniors playing in all senior teams.

Anyone queries can be directed to anyone on the committee or your team captain.

Under 15’s lose to Doncaster

An early Sunday morning saw the under 15’s travel to Doncaster. The day did not start well with only 10 players turning up.
Batting first, the openers Charley Webber and Josh Varley saw off a good Doncaster opening attack. Scoring was slow with the score on 20 odd when the first wicket fell in the 6th over. Johnny Udall came to the wicket and played shots all around the wicket to up the scoring rate. Wickets kept on falling at the other end, but this did not bother Johnny as he made 44 until he decided to fall onto his own stumps. After 20 overs we reached 104 for 6.  read more »

Top Pavilion

Top Pavilion

The top pavilion has passed the inspection by the South Yorkshire League following a week-long restoration led by Julie Lister. Thanks to everyone who contributed to ensuring this was a success. The following people deserve a special thanks - Bill Croft, Andy Leiper, Tom Lister and Andy Staley - as they worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure we were able to finish the project on time.

I hope that the teams and players using this facility appreciate the effort people put into cleaning and restoring the pavilion and do their best to keep it this way.

Event this Friday at Abbeydale

This Friday there is a Corporate event at Abbeydale which is a 6-a-side competion sponsered by Bentley Motors.
Each team has an ex-international cricketer attached (Mike GATTING, Robin SMITH, Phil DEFRETAS, Chris LEWIS, Gladstone SMALL, Jimmy ADAMS, Mark ILOT and Devon MALCOM to name a few).
This will be a good spectator event and a good opportunity for any youngsters to collect autographs.
I went last year and all the players were very approachable and up for a chat. There may also be opportunities to become involved as people inevitably drop out at the last minute, so have your kit in your boot if your around.
The event starts at 11am weather permitting.

Club Coaching & Practices

After much discussion and debate I've decided on the following structure for practice sessions this season.

First, second and selected Academy players will practice together on the main square, while the rest will use the artificial nets under the supervision of Alan Hampshire. Fielding drills will be open to everyone and compulsory for First, Second and Academy players. We will also do various fitness drills which is also compulsory for First, Second and Academy players and voluntary for everyone else.  read more »
