Sheffield Collegiate First XI vs Castleford First XI Yorkshire League Round 7

After an absence of a few matches I am back with the latest match report, Castleford. The others that I have missed out will now be forgotten (rest their souls) and I will start afresh. On a sunny Saturday the troops set of up to the town of Castleford and a ground with some monstrously big square boundaries. Spiritual leader Matthew Dixon won the toss and decided to have a Gary Pratt. Opening up was our esteemed matriarch Blade, and the Bow-Legged wonder Joseph Edward Root, Yorkshire CCC employee. Blade started off brightly and hit a nice boundary before he indulged in one of his favourite pastimes when not playing cricket. However, fishing in cricket is not a good idea and snicked off to one Jason Pitcher, who used to frequent the squares of Abbeydale.

Andrew J Wylie- No Longer the Youngest and Never the Fittest

Saturday represents a sad occasion in our recent history as we bid farewell to one of our most successful players of recent times as well as a Treasurer and a top bloke.

My two year stint as First Eleven Captain has been described as the club’s “Doldrum Years”. However, I would like to think that one or two good things came to pass and the signing of “Wyles” was certainly one of the highlights for me.

I had heard of the name Wylie as a certain John Wylie, schoolteacher from Aigburth (couldn’t bring myself to mention the L word) had during his stint as Manager of Lancashire Under 11s coached my younger brother.

Of good stock and used to playing on the County Ground at Aigburth. Where better therefore to make your Collegiate debut than Stocksbridge! Anyway he took 8 for 12 and Ian Howe advised me that it might be worth seeing if he fancied changing his mind and staying with us for the summer rather than just the University term.

You have much to answer for Howie!

Sheffield Collegiate made it four wins out of five in the league with a four wicket victory over a strong Castleford side which probably goes down as the finest win of the season so far.

Indian Tour 2008

The club will undertake it’s first ever tour of India, and to my knowledge, first ever overseas tour this October.

The tour party departs from Manchester on the 22nd October and will return on the 10th November. The tour will consist of 12 matches of varying formats and will take in four cities. It will start in Mumbai before moving to Pune and Bangalore, where the India-Australia match is currently being played, and will end in the seaside resort of Goa.

Massive Loosen Up

TOA 89 for 7/8 sorry no book
Massive 90 for 0

Firstly huge thanks to Riaz for facilitating this game and selecting and rounding up such a fine bunch of cricketers following the emigration of the elected skipper who has done a Boocock in more ways than one. The cheque’s in the post.

On a beautiful Spring evening and despite being delayed by a bunch of students the Massive took the field to warm applause as two from Castleford (recently escaped from the railway cutting) contemplated their first pint.
