The Usual Suspects – All 35 of them

By my reckoning 35 players represented the Academy this season. Please shout up if you have been overlooked. Here is my take on to the individuals concerned. Don’t look now if easily offended!

Andy Simpson, The Optician. An able Vice Captain. I think that is how Nina described him! He has been invaluable as a relatively senior player (26!). Despite having to work Saturday mornings he has always arrived on time and for the early part of the season performed the duties of Treasurer with an efficiency that Malcolm Glazer would admire.

Under 15 Reds Win the George Drabble division

Sheffield Collegiate Red v Eckington Sunday 26 July 2009

With the teams level on points going into this, the final match of the season, everyone was hoping for good weather. At 9.45 it was raining at Abbeydale, and it continued for another 45 minutes. It was not heavy enough to saturate the pitch though and when it stopped, it was agreed that a 15-over-per-side match could take place without risking the pitch for the 3rd XI cup match in the afternoon. The only stipulation was that if the rain restarted the match would be abandoned immediately, whatever the score.

Academy melted by the heat of the Furniss

Following a week of selection politics and a day trip to Rome it was pleasing to wake to glorious sunshine on Saturday. It was even more pleasing to be greeted by a green outfield.

The ground duly passed an inspection from Umpire Bentham who could not see what all the fuss had been about. Credit to Crofty and his gang of willing volunteers for producing an excellent cricket wicket.

Interesting chat about the virtues of junior cricket with Mr Bentham. It is good to know that the league is as committed to junior cricket as we are.

U17’s First round win in the Paramore Cup

U17’s Win First round tie in Paramour Cup

SCCC 130 for 3 from 20
Shiregreen 62 All out from 19.5

It’s been some time since the last report, one game not reported on was a defeat to Aston Hall a quick overview was that we had to chase 136 for 1 with J Orr 53 retired. We fell short by 18 runs with Matt Cork giving me more than a good reason to move him up the batting order with 45 Not Out supported well by Elliot Winter on 21 Not Out. (We just ran short of overs a lesson to be learned here about looking for singles and being on your toes)

On to the cup match,

2nd’s knocked out of Mick Savage Cup

http://sheffieldcollegiate.play-cricket.com/scoreboard/scorecard.asp?id=10654314

The 2nd’s continued their miserable run by losing to Aston Hall in the first round of the Mick Savage Cup at Abbeydale. Showing a few changes from the selected team due to ridiculous rules and transport issues, the team were encouraged to relax and enjoy the match in the hope that the pressure free environment would lead to a better performance.
