OEC beat Hundall despite trying hard not to

Old Edwardians Collegiate 174 - 8 (46 overs). Hundall 172 all out. OEC 25 points. OEC best Hundall (undefeated in the league last year) by 2 runs in a tense game, despite gifting Hundall 41 extras in a loose display.OEC were inserted by Hundall on a damp wicket that looked as though it might cause problems. However Vaughan, who finally managed to get an afternoon off from work, scored an elegant half century, as did WWright, to put OEC in the driving seat. From that point Hundall's bowling and Alan Hampshire's thoughtful captaincy began to put the brakes on and apart from Butler (28) the batting was somewhat inept. OEC finished on 174-8, which we would have settled for at the outset, but which was a shade disappointing given the fine start.

Hundall got off to a solid start, partly gifted by indifferent bowling from the OEC seam attack. Hampshire looked in a hurry but eventually fell to a soft dismissal with a catching practice shot to gully. Winter's 17 over spell was in two halves. His first few overs were poor ending with XXX smashing two straight fours and then a fearsome shot to Shacker at extra cover. Shacker elected to save his teeth and caught it an inch in front of them. From that point Angry bowled reasonably well but it was the poor balls that got his three wickets!

Pursehouse batted well, although he should have been caught early at square leg, to get Hundall back into the game. Sensible lower order batting left Hundall needing 3 from the last over, which given the previous few overs they were going to get in wides and noballs, but Pursehouse was last out spooning a poor ball (which should have been smacked for 4) softly to a grinning Terence at extra cover to give OEC a 2-run win.

Hundall were unfortunate to lose ex-Collegiate player Woods. He arrived late because of police work and then injured himself retrieving a ball before he was able to bowl. If he was fit Hundall would surely have won.

On the other Hundall were fortunate to benefit from a gift of 41 extras, largely wides and no balls. If we are to win the league we have to win games like this, which we did this time, but we will continue to do so only by much tighter bowling performances.
