2nds all over Elsecar

Bully's picture

SCCC 163 all out (Walton 47, Hickman 0*, Weekes 5-25), Elsecar 160 all out (Filfth 4fer, Dicko got a The 2nds bandwagon continued at Elsecar on Saturday, as we inflicted their first home defeat for 14 months. God knows how, but read on if you would like to have an idea. Our warm up begun with taunts from the Elsecar players about our training gear. 400 a year for fancy shorts and t-shirts we would expect at least a suit were just a few of the remarks from some of their lads. I reminded myself I was in Barnsley, and therefore refrained from commenting. We then spent the next 10-15 minutes watching Hoyland Vikings Rugby Union Club warm up next to us, with several cans of carling and some drills that can best be described as interesting . Anyway, onto the cricket. Stewie lost the toss, and we were inserted on the green wicket carefully prepared by the groundstaff at Elsecar. (He was going to bat anyway).

Danny Walton and Joe Root opened the innings, and batted sensibly. They put on 64 for the first wicket, which gave us a perfect opportunity to bat on and get a good score. Root J (caught behind) was replaced by his Dad, and after a couple of nice shots, he was lbw soon after. Danny got out (caught and bowled) for 47, he deserved his 50. Stewie and Riaz (I think) kept things going, and after a glorious cover drive off Lesroy, captain marvel tried it again and he played on. Wickets continued to tumble, with not many runs added at the same time. From memory, I think only Filth got into double figures after Stewie and our good start had been wiped out. Bully joined Dicko towards the end of the innings, and played majestically. Leaving balls with great style, and showing no inclination of adding to our total. For those of you who didn t know, I knew we had enough. Dicko went in the last over, replaced by T who tried to hit Lesroy into orbit. I think the bail may have ended up there, but the ball certainly didn t.

Nice tea, consisting of pasta salads, rice salads, good sandwiches, strawberries and cream, melons.

Elsecar clearly thought they had enough. T and Filth opened the bowling, and the latter soon got rid of danger man Tim Farmer. T (with the help of bully at midoff) accounted for the other opener, and Filth then got number 3 out with another good ball. Still no Meadows, Weekes or the other guy. 30-3, they built a good partnership around Danksy and Pete Wilson. Pete Wilson tried one too many shots, caught by Batts on the boundary, and Danksy did the same, bowled by Riaz. Lesroy came to the crease, hit Dicko hard through cover but then got caught softly by Danny, sweeping at square leg. 120-6. Please note, despite taking these wickets, we were not at all confident of success and were playing pressure free cricket. Captain through the ball to Bully, sh*t or bust pal, come on . Thanks skip, no pressure. Filth back on at the other end, and had Jason Meadows caught at mid off by T. 150-7. Still 14 runs to win, they were still favourites. Bully got number 9 plum in front in the over after, and with Filth having the same success in the over after that, they were 159-9 at the start of, what turned out to be the final over of the day. The guy (cant remember his name) who steadied the ship, took a single off the first ball, expoising number 11 to Bull. First ball, he defended, second ball, he played and missed, third ball his middle stump was uprooted. Massive celebrations, everyone jumping on top of each other, etc. Great feeling, truly superb end to the game. Still got no idea (a) what happened and (b) how we won. Anyone care to comment?
