S.C.C.C 192-9 (Richards 86, Butler 40)
On one of the hottest days of the year, the seconds travelled to Darfield in a must win game knowing that everyone had to win to ease relegation fears. The day started off poorly with people turning up late and the warm up being useless, which pretty much set up the tone for the day.
We batted first and Riaz talked about the wicket being slow and playing straight but Lister must not have heard as he was out trying to play across the line and getting a leading edge...caught and bowled. Danny nicked off, Israr got a poor LBW and Simmo played a lazy shot and we were 43-4. Thankfully Riaz was still there supported well by Butts, Both played well, taking the attack to the bowlers, taking the score to 103 when Butts fell. Bartles helped Riaz to another 50...showing patience is a virtue. We looked like getting 220ish but Wongy fell and the tail didnt wag. Riaz fell for 86 and it was left to Waif and Tom Hancock to see it out. 190 was about 30 less than we should have got.
Riaz said that Darfield might come out attacking to get ahead of the rate and we would need to be ready for a chance and anticipate the ball coming to us....again nobody seemed to be listening.
Benjy struggled with the slope and couldn't find any rhythm bowling too many four balls. Butts bowled well but didnt have any luck from either end. Riaz turned to spin and Waif picked up a wicket straight away after Benjy (who listened to Riaz about anticipation) held a good diving catch. Longers picked up another wicket after a scrambling catch by Colton.
Young Tom Hancock came on to bowl and beat the bat a couple of times and picked up his first Premier League wicket LBW and was unlucky to got for 30 in his 3.2 overs as he only bowled one bad ball. We lost in 36 overs due to....as per usual...poor fielding, people scared of the ball, not anticipating the ball coming to us, batters not scoring enough runs. We are not bottom of the league because our bowlers have been bowling well but had a day off on Saturday, whereas our batters (apart from a few) don't seem to have a day on.
Two costly droped catches from the two best fielders and can't really be blamed as they are the only ones who probably would have got hands to it.
We need to make sure we get to games on time...one of us needs to take responsibility for the warm-up because Riaz can't do everything.
Shiregreen beat Elsecar so we really have to step up to the plate and soon!!!
Same old Bully.
