SCCC represented in the Lord’s Taverners Lord Cowdrey Cup 12th - 14th August 2008.
Two junior players Tom Hancock (skipper) and Jonny Udall (wkt keeper) were in the squad that nearly followed Sheffield’s example last year in winning the competition, this year they were beaten finalists. Sheffield who had won both games (Leeds and Bradford) to get into the final stages, then won all three of their play off group games but lost to London North in the 40 over final.
But Sheffield did well when it came to the individual awards, the judges were the coaches from Arundel and Sheffield won 3 out of the 5 awards. The bowling award went to James Martin from Whitley Hall, the James Maxwell Fielding Award went to Jonny Udall, and the Fair Play award went to Sheffield, the award collected by skipper Tom Hancock who put in a good performance with bat and ball and just missed out on a hat-trick in the final.
A separate word for Jonny in that the award he was successful in winning was competed for by nearly 100 players so it was a great achievement to be chosen. He produced some fine performances which included some amazing run outs, in addition to stumpings and catches. Having been given the nickname of sparrow, for his chirpy nature, fellow players at SCCC may have heard he lost his voice urging on his team members but sorry chaps, following his convalescence in Cornwall his voice is starting to come back!!
Both lads showed an attitude and commitment that showed what SCCC endeavours to produce from all its juniors and this year it has been evident in the success in various age groups. Well done to all the lads.
