A very sad day indeed.
Having played against MPV when he was a lad following his career with Yorkshire and then especially with England has given me an absolutely huge amount of pleasure.
Everything had an added excitement and pleasure when he was involved, the wonderful innings leading up to and then in the series in Australia were as good as anything I have seen (first at Bramall Lane for the Aussies in 1961) in nearly 50 years.
After that his success as Captain, obviously especially in 2005 just made me feel so proud to know him. His recent struggles have been such a shame for all English fans and I truly hope he can be happy in whatever he does next having given us all so much.
Funnily enough my main memory of seeing him live is of him bowling Tendulkar at Trent Bridge...I think he quite enjoyed that. A moment for Dovey who once memorably suggested he should concentrate on his offbreaks rather than batting
Thank you Michael.
