We started the day on equal second with University Staff and remained there with a great win over Millhouses Works while Staff lost to Bakewell. Millhouses 201-9 (Sealy 4-fer). SCCC 202-4, 2 balls to spare, 20 points.
Congratulations to Sealy for for assembling a remarkable side while all and sundry were on their hols. I suspect a lot of phone calls were made and lots of arms twisted in assembling this side. The club owes him one, again. Several out of retirement and consequently lots of kit borrowed, apart from Parrsie who bought new stuff and arrived with it in a bag for life. The whole thing seemed somewhat reminiscent of the Mean Machine team assembly but without the murder (at least, so far as I know).
We inserted and they made a steady start, and really continued in that vein throughout. It got a little ugly at the end in the rush for runs but largely we stuck at it. Sealy 4-fer with apparently several strikes involving arm balls? Parrsie bucketed a skier. T held one as well. Martin Slater got a couple in Bothamesque style.
Rather felt 201 was a few too many. Owen and Angry opened the batting (yes, really) and put on quite a few before the inevitable runout but it was actually Owen that went rather than Angry collapsing in the middle of the pitch. Geoff and Rookie put on quite a few as well before Geoff called for a runner and was immediately out. Highlight of the innings was a star-quality partnership between Rookie and Rob Priestley at a run-a-ball, watched by old man Neil. I hadn't appreciated that batting style was controlled by genetics but it must be, as it was like watching Priesters himself.
Unfortunate runout with the win in sight but enter ice man Miller Ice and it was all over in the last over with two balls to spare. Delight all round and good evening in bar with several promises of returns to playing status to bolster the ranks next week and next year.
