Proud day for Sheffield

SCCC represented in the Lord’s Taverners Lord Cowdrey Cup 12th - 14th August 2008.

Two junior players Tom Hancock (skipper) and Jonny Udall (wkt keeper) were in the squad that nearly followed Sheffield’s example last year in winning the competition, this year they were beaten finalists. Sheffield who had won both games (Leeds and Bradford) to get into the final stages, then won all three of their play off group games but lost to London North in the 40 over final.  read more »

Club Family Day

The Club Family Day and Gordon Hall 6-a-side that was unfortunately cancelled last year due to rain is due to be held on Sunday, August 24.

With the current unavailibility of a significant number of players we are contemplating changes from the 6-a-side format to 20/20 and also possibly the date. We are looking at a junior and senior 20/20 match with players made up from U/13 to U/17 in the junior match and all teams in the seniors. The matches will be played in coloured clothing with a white ball and all the normal 20/20 rules.  read more »

Spirited performance……….same result

The 2nd team hosted Whitley Hall on Saturday – the first game in our run against the so called big sides. Few changes to the team from previous week, notably Butts going up to the 1st team and Simmo/Lister being omitted. All in all – the dressing room looked considerably young.  read more »

England's greatest captain resigns

It is with the greatest sadness that I report Michael Vaughan resigned as England captain today. We knew when he joined the club at 13 or so that he was destined for England and I for one have taken enormous pleasure watching him over the years since then. I saw him bat in the millennium test in Cape Town in 2000 and saw his last innings at Edgbaston on Friday. Only 17 but the class in those four 4s is incomparable.

As the saying goes form is temporary and class permanent. Am I alone in thinking that yet again third rate media types have weakened England cricket (ahead of the Ashes) through constant sniping? What is is about this country that tolerates the media's tendency so often to pick apart the country's successes, sporting and otherwise?

Skipper Sausages Can't Save Thirds

S.C.C.C. 92 a.o. (Croft 25) Warmsmorth 94 for 8 (Tasker 6 for 29)
Despite the addition of Sausages Simpson as skipper and to ease some pressure on the batting and keeping, the thirds fell to the side just above them, a defeat which all but confirmed relegation.

Warmsworth didn't arive until ten minutes before the start and even then they were down to ten men. Todd Warburton woke Stefan up and we had a full compliment of players so it was fair to say we had the best of the early exchanges. We lost the toss and batted although (after much debate) it turns out we would have done the same.  read more »

Lost at Sheffield Works

1. The match
2. My cricket kit as in whites shirt etc. (the stuff we wash!)
3. Someones cricket boots large size
4. Youth batting gloves and a box all in an Arsenal bag.

Unfortunately I was unable to find item 1, but did manage to retrieve items 2 & 3 from the ground. Was also informed about item 4 which was locked away in the "pavilion". Anyone recognising that they have lost these items contact me or Sheffield works direct.

U15' Reds have that away day.........at last

Following Tom Lister’s tactical master class of relieving Udall senior from his team manager duties the team was picked for the match against Frecheville. Tom did not have the problem of getting players to turn up…quite the opposite. On to the game, T Hancock and J Lister opened with Jonny at 3 (me thinks pressure was put on J Lister to open, no guesses as to who it was eh Jon) With the score on 12 the first wicket fell, this had jonny coming to the crease (having a point to prove to Udall senior, who had beat his score on Saturday …..Chin up son).
Both Tom and Jon played some nice shots around the ground both giving the opposition one chance to send them back. Tom retired on 51 and he says he cant bat!! Jonny followed later on 34. The final score being 119 for 3.  read more »

SEAGULLS HAVE WINGS CLIPPED

SCCC 219-8 Blade 102
Scarborough 180-9 Nads 4-74 PT 3-40

Hot day at Abbeydale no breeze. Toss won and Dicko wanted to bat.

Blade and Skunk put on another 50 partnership until pepe was caught at slip for 28 again with 60 on the board. Stewie went quickly. Root snr added another 70 odd with Blade. A cloth to midwicket was a disappointing end for Rooty.

Simmo smacked 20 odd and we stumbled to 219 with the old man making another brilliant 100. Especially when the zimbabwian was swining it round trees both ways.

Early wicket of Dan Harland helped lbw from pistol. A decent caught behind followed stood up and pete had 2 fer.  read more »

10 Man Mansfield beat top of the league

S.C.C.C. 183 a.o. (Sausages Simpson 82, Lister 46) South Normanton 160(ish) a.o. (Croft 3 fer 28, Fiddling 3 fer 11)

A trip to the team top of the league after a long hard day in the sun for most on saturday looked like a tough proposition, especially at about midday when we had 8 players! However, by half past 7 we had full points in the bag and all the frantic phonecalls of the morning had been long forgotten.  read more »

The seconds...

S.C.C.C 192-9 (Richards 86, Butler 40)
Darfield 193-3

On one of the hottest days of the year, the seconds travelled to Darfield in a must win game knowing that everyone had to win to ease relegation fears. The day started off poorly with people turning up late and the warm up being useless, which pretty much set up the tone for the day.  read more »

Winning streak comes to an end for the 3rds

S.C.C.C. 120 a.o. (K Javed 47) Whiston Parish 121 for 6

Looking to build on last weeks victory the 3rds went to Whiston without Sir Alan and with a quite differnt line up. DJ took over skippering duties and predictably lost the toss and we were inserted on the hottest day of the year.  read more »
