Bank Holiday Weekend saw 6 games played across 4 teams, with both the 1sts and 3rds playing the cup and league respectively on Monday. What a weekend it was with 6 wins out of 6!!
The 1st XI made the annual early long trip to Cleethorpes hoping to follow on from their dominant win last week. They did not disappoint! Having been asked to bat again despite the early loss of Tom Rowley our top order got us of to a good start again reaching 78/1. A good partnership between Eliot Callis and Mike Simpson took the score past 150 with the boys looking set for a good total. Unfortunately a collapse followed leaving us in a tricky situation at 163/8. A crucial partnership of 36 between Danny Walton and Luke Shutt took us to 200 before the last wicket fell. 206 all out with Eliot Callis 65 from 87 the highlight of the innings.
In reply it was the Luke Shutt and Henry Eldred show as they ripped through the Cleethorpes batting order leaving them 39/8. Both recorded remarkable figures with Henry finishing with 12-5-11-3 and Luke 15-5-28-5. A small stand at the end was quickly ended by Josh Varley who took the last two wickets in just 7 balls. Cleethorpes 62 all out. Another brilliant effort by the team!
Our 2nd XI hosted local rivals Hallam at Abbeydale looking for back to back wins. Having won the toss and chosen to bat skip Andy Simpson’s decision looked a good one as Blade and Ben Rooke put on 72 for the first wicket. A couple of contributions from Chris Stewart and Josh White took the score to 113/3. Unfortunately a collapse similar to those last year happened and we fell to 128/7. However as is always talked about we bat deep and a counter attacking partnership between Jonny Udall and Collegiate new boy Abhishek Kulkarni took the score to 168. Abhishek fell for 29 from just 19 balls including back to back sixes towards the car park! A couple of late hits by Rob Shaw took us past 180 before being bowled out with 2 balls left.
In reply a big effort was needed to keep us in the game. Rob Shaw provided exactly that with a big inswinger 2nd ball to get the first wicket! Abhishek showing his talents now with the ball got the second wicket sending the middle stump cartwheeling, always a great sight! A good way to get your first SCCC wicket. Hallam 8-2 and under pressure. What followed was a great spell of bowling in partnership, with Abhishek bowing quickly and making life uncomfortable for the batters with no reward. At the other end Rob reaped the benefits of that pressure picking up another 3 wickets, Hallam 52/5. Tom Eldred and Matt Tyas took over and kept up the pressure brilliantly with plenty of maidens, Tom finishing with 2/25 from his 11 overs. Rob Shaw came back following Matt T’s 7 over spell to bowl full and straight and duly delivered with 2 wickets to finish with 6/30 from 11.2 overs. Hallam 100 all out and two wins from two!
Our 3rd XI made the trip to Rockingham looking to start the season positively. On what was described as an interesting pitch 18 wickets fell for just 202 runs! Choosing to bowl first a great start from both Eddy Lomas and Alex Masterson had the opposition in trouble at 40-4, with 2 wickets a piece. Despite Eddy bowling a very impressive spell of 10-4-16-2 it was his dad who delivered the goods collecting 5 wickets for only 20 runs. Jim bowled 11.2 overs wrapping up the innings leaving Rockingham 100all out.
In reply we were 2-2 before the experience of Matt Lee and Lawrie Brennan decided a counter attack was the best option in a small chase. They traded blows and took the score to 64 before Matt fell. After Lawrie fell for 44 the game was there for taking before a big collapse left us 98-8. Luckily our young guns are made of tough stuff and Oliver Tyas and Eddy Lomas held there nerve with Eddy hitting a 4 to win the game. A great start to the season despite the drama!
Our 5th XI hosted Sheffield Transport CC at our home away from home HSBC. Having been asked to bat first a solid top order effort saw us get runs on the board early. Tim Koerner at 3 scored 35 before Arun Rupra continued his good form from last year top scoring with 45. Some late order runs from James ‘Sparky’ Hall getting 19 meant we posted an impressive 196-9 in 46 overs.
In reply our ever youthful bowling attack showed their skills once again reducing Transport to 98/6 with 3 wickets for Harry Thomas and 2 for Sparky. Harvey Rowntree also bowled a great spell collecting 2 wickets from his 7 overs. Despite a valiant hundred from their number 4 falling for a score of 114, they could only manage 167/9 from their 46 giving our 5s a comfortable victory. We say it every week and will continue to do so but this young group continues to impress and will surely go onto bigger things!
Bank Holiday Monday saw two more games played with the 1st XI taking on local rivals Hallam CC at Sandygate in the Yorkshire League Cup and our 3rd XI playing Sprotbrough in the league at Abbeydale.
Batting first and with a slight change in batting order the lads set about the task of getting runs on the board. Unfortunately we lost Danny Walton and overseas Tom Rowley early with Hallams openers making use of the new pink ball from each end. However the ever resilient Dan Priestley held firm and along with Billy Root put on a partnership of 78 with Dan out for 23, Simon Guy the new man in. What followed was simply a masterclass in manipulating the field and taking every single run on offer. The two put on a show, making it obvious to everyone of their class, adding 127 together. Simon finally fell for 60 including a huge 6 to reach his 50! Billy kept going and along with the positive cricket of Mike Simpson helped push the score well above 250. Billy reached his hundred with a well run two and fell with only 3 balls left for an incredible 120 from 105 balls. Mike finished on 21 off 11 balls including a monster six that cleared several houses in the Hallam area. 277/5 from our 45 overs.
In reply our bowlers stepped yet again, enjoying the big swing of the pink ball, Luke Shutt and Henry Eldred had both openers out cheaply with the score 16/2. They both continued to make life hard for Hallam taking another wicket each leaving the score at 37/4. A decent partnership followed but was cut short by Billy Root who collected 2/18 from 8 overs. Captain Matt Dixon also picked up 2 wickets before Dan Priestley wrapped up the innings. Hallam 127 all out and a 150 run victory for the lads. We enjoyed playing in coloured kit and pink balls last year, heres for more of the same!
Our 3rd XI hosted Sprotbrough on Abbeydale bottom pitch looking to carry Saturdays win into the next league match. Bowling first it was a case of maidens, maidens and more maidens as life was made very tough for the opposition by our youthful attack. Eddy Lomas 11-5-26-2 and Matt Tyas 10-6-11-3 leading the way with Oliver Tyas’ 7-2-9-0 showing no reward for tight bowling. Several dropped chances meant the innings lasted the full 46 overs, with Sprotbroughs opener scoring 70. 118/8 the final score.
In reply our batters made light work of the total with Lexi Moore playing his natural game and Jake Foster playing a brilliant anchor role. Lexi out for 37 and Jake left unbeaten on 41* as Lawrie Brennan finished the game with a big 6 onto the Rugby pitch. 122/3 inside 25 overs. Another top win for this team and with plenty of strength in depth this should be a good year!
