The VPXI made the trip to local rivals Totley on Saturday, eager to move on from two successive defeats. Captain bull returned, and there were also first starts for Benji and former captain Seal.
Toss won, and Totley were inserted. Wellman and Watson became another new opening partnership with the ball, and bowled economically. There was very little in the pitch, the faster they tried to bowl, the slower it was! Wellman picked up 2 quick wickets, a good catch by Bully who initially parried it (via his thigh) and caught the rebound & a half tracker that hit half way up. Nothing else happened of note, so they were both replaced by longers (sporting a pedometer on his waist band for a ‘corporate challenge’ and the snake. 1 each for these two, and Totley were 44-4.
Worryingly, we let things drift again; dropped catches and easy runs meant Totley crept towards 100. However, the returning Benji broke the partnership and with the returning Wellman, 92-4 became 99-8. A late flurry from their skipper meant Totley posted 138. In fairness, this was 40 more than they should have got. We must get into the habit of finishing teams off when we have them on the ropes. 3 each for Watson and Wellman, 2 for Pearson and Pedo man (not to be confused with paedo man).
Average tea, we were hoping for a curried shepherds pie like last year, but got sandwiches.
Bob and Ashy opened the batting, putting 67 on for the wicket with sensible batting. Bob adjusted lbw by Benji (yes, no umpires) which Bob took really well. Enter the form man Stewie who carried on his early season form. Both ashy and Stewie completed their 50s, and we won comfortably by 9 wickets.
This puts us joint second, so momentum building. Home v the Medics this week, hoping to make it 4 from 5 in the league. Disappointingly, the Cricket Inn was closed for a wedding which meant no good beer after the game.
Note to all – if longers says he will do match report, ignore him. Apparently he has been busy ironing, washing and cleaning this week and had no time.
