Driffield 120 ao: Lal 4 for 22
Collegiate 123 – 9: Nads 53, Greaves 25
Barnsley 80 ao: Lal 7 for 46
Collegiate 81 – 9: Moys 29no
Driffield first. Lord won the toss and stuck them in on a damp wicket. Lal got Yorkshire’s Gale out third ball with a debatable LBW. 0-1 great start. The next 40 overs were probably the best we have bowled as a unit all season. Lal was like a man possessed, bowling 18 overs unchanged into the wind for 4-22. I don’t think he bowled a bad ball and his accuracy meant that Lord could rotate the bowlers to chip away at the other batsmen. Ben Fielding was the pick of the other bowlers. He returned 2 – 5 off his allotted 5 overs, bowling exceptionally well and picked up the wicket of Pyrah who played a ridiculous reverse sweep to Ben 2nd ball to give an easy catch to Danny B behind the stumps. Nads struggled with the wind, but still bowled well and Lord bowled tidily to wrap up the tail. Fielding was generally very good (though we still give a way soft singles) and Danny b behind the stumps was excellent.
Collegiate’s reply started slowly and we soon found ourself 30-6 (again!). A mixture of poor shot selection and very good bowling the cause. We were staring down the barrel and only shakey’s and Blade’s fascinating discussion on correct sit up technique alleviated the anxiety. Nads and greavesy began to repair the damage and a mixture of luck and some excellent shots saw us get up to 70 odd. Greavesy then tried one shot too many and fell for a very good 20 odd. Coupled with the 44 from Castelford, Greavesy has got the potential to be a very good all rounder for the team, (just wish he’d get into line against the quicks!!).
Nads continued to hit away and received good support from Lord. With 4 to win and three wickets left the game was all but over. But Nads played an outrageous slog and got caught for an excellent 50 and then lord was caught bat pad for 16. And then came Lal…! Swinging his bat as strode out to the wicket, everybody in East Yorkshire knew what he was going to do first ball. No need for a guard and then came the inevitable… 6 runs over cow, fantastic shot and how we won that game after being 30-6 is still a mystery. 8 points from a good side though, great win.
Barnsley: Pitch damp and probably not suitable to play but they were keen (as expected) so we started a 25 over game.
Barnsley batted first and never really got going as Lal bowled superbly (again) to take 7 fer. Greavesy gave him great support to keep the other end tight. When Nads came on to replace greavesy, he was virtually unplayable picking up 2 for 20. Lal wrapped up their innings when Mike Simpson (yes Mike Simpson!) took a well judged catch in the deep. The wicket was pretty tasty but 80, just over three an over, was well within our grasp…
We started off slowly but solidly. Just what we needed, 20 odd off the first ten. Blade then was out trying to hit over the top. Simmo came in and smashed his first ball gloriously for 4 but then fell next ball as he got one that reared off a length to be caught and bowled. I came in at 4, but lost rooty next over as a mix up meant that rooty was run out by yards. 30 – 3 soon became 30 for 6 (yes again – 4/5th time this season it has happened now) as Macca, Shakey and Nads all went for 0. Greavesy came in next and played a few nice shots to bring it up to 50 odd before another run-out and he fell for 8. Lord came and went and at 60 – 7 with 4 overs left the game was starting to turn to Barnsley. Ben Fielding hit a four and between us we got to the last over needing 10 to win. 1st ball, another run out. Ben slipped on the wicket trying to get back for the second. 9 to win 5 balls left. Next ball, 6! Fortunately Hepworth bowled it in the slot and the bat did the rest of the work to get it over the boundary. 3 from 4 balls. Next ball single. 2 from 3. Lal heaved his first ball and Widdup dropped a difficult chance at midwicket. Single though to leave 1 from 2 – game tied. Next ball, Yorker no run. Last ball, scrambled single as mid-off fumbled a straight forward pick up. Elation!! Beating Barnsley is always nice and to give credit to them, they bowled very well and didn’t give much away. They play the game hard (as you should) and on this occasion we managed the win, which was very satisfying especially as they beat us by 10 wickets at their place! fantastic win and hopefully a top five finish is now a realistic target.
