Academy Miss Out on Chance to Go Top of the Pile

Despite Tommy Bartles best efforts the Academy didn t take their opportunities and take top spot. SCCC 161-9 (Bartles 65) Whiston P.C. 162-7 (Bartles 4-14, Jones 78)

The toss was lost by stand-in skipper Riaz and we were asked to bat. After a couple of boundaries at the start of the innings, Filth and Khuram we both out LBW after some clever bowling. Riaz and Marko also dismissed and with the score on around 30-4 the Academy looked in trouble. However, Tommy Bartles stuck around and played himself in before letting loose with some brilliant drives and pull shots to reach his first fifty of the season. His fellow spice boy Danny Belfit accompanied him well picking up some vital runs. Abhai and Billy chipped in with a couple of runs and it was left to Ben and Colton to block out to not let them got 7 if they got our runs. 161 was a good total to say the trouble we were in at the start after a good knock from SBG..

The team talk was good, early wickets were needed to give us a chance. .

Davey got us just that with a good nut to dismiss the opener LBW. Ben picked up the number 3 and spirits were high as we realised we could get 7. However the other opener Jones and the number 4 sent the ball to the boundary and, what looked like, took the game away from us. Jones fell when Tommy Bartles was introduced into the attack after a good catch from Khuram. Tommy then picked up 2 more and spirits were then lifted as we had a good chance. However, chances didn t go to hand and maybe just 20 runs too little meant that they got the runs with 3 wickets spare. .

A brilliant knock with the bat a spell with the ball form Bartles gave us the chance but things didn t go our way. .

A little bit of controversy at the end but I cannot comment as I am unsure of the details..

This also gives me a chance to congratulate Joe Root on making his first, of many I m sure, hundred for England on Saturday.
