Wickersley 270-3 dec (Tomlinson 119 Jahangir 123) SCCC 187-8 (Knott 31 Seager 36 Dixon 36)…….
A game which went the full distance and ended in very dark conditions at approx 7pm. We won the toss and inserted. I thought the only way we were going to win was to bowl them out cheaply. It also put the onus on Wick to take 10 wkts bowling second for the title.
We dropped Tommo 2nd ball at 1st slip, Jonesy left with a purple bruise just to the left of his solar plexus. We didn’t get another sniff until the openers had put on 230 odd! They may have played & missed at a couple of deliveries but those apart their timing and placement were impeccable. On the other hand we bowled a lot at their legs and were punished accordingly. After they had got used to the pace of the wicket anything on middle also went through the leg side. Six bowlers were used and they all went the distance. Wick declared after 36.3 overs. Gareth bowled Tommo & Jonesy bought Jahangir!
This left us 63 overs to score 271. However, we were missing Renners, Rooty, Stewie & Vaughany from the regular top 5 and Colgate & Wally from the week before. To top it off Simmo jr fell ill during fielding (Keith came on as 12thers and 3 wkts fell immediately) and batted at 9. Israh ended his season in fine fettle- lbw 2nd ball. Knotty and Karate Kid Bawden took us to 70 and then a flurry of wickets left us 90-5. There were still 40 overs left at this point but it was a bit of an ask! Seags thrived under the pressure taking up the sheet anchor role. He was subject to some stringent comments. ("This bloke’s a statue." "Statue? The bloke in Barrymore’s pool has got more life in him.") Rob Jones & Andy Harrison plucked out both my and Seags’ middle pegs respectively but Jonesy & Simmo sr(Embarrassed in the shower when asked by their lads:"What the hell does that do?") held out . No pts but we weren’t going to give them anything. Wickersley accepted our stance in the bar afterwards.
Elsecar won the title having beaten Phoenix, the first time they were top all season.
An enjoyable season. Finishing 5th with hardly the same side out 2 weeks on the trot is an admirable result and I think will be recognised as such by the rest of the league. Finally, good luck to Gareth in his catalogue model/voice over quest. Not only has he fitted in, batted and bowled well throughout but taken the 2 best catches I have ever seen.
